Miller Industries Hungary Kft. will manufacture disposable surgical instruments and isolation kits mainly for public hospitals, as well as hyaluronic acid products for medical use. The company received almost 1.2 billion forints in government subsidy for the approximately 2 billion investment project to be implemented in Marcali, which could significantly reduce Hungary’s import exposure in this area as well.

Every year, Hungarian hospitals use hundreds of thousands of disposable surgical kits; the 30 different kits that are available are suitable to cover the whole of the human body.

These sterile isolation materials are essential for operations, whether they are minor eye surgeries or major orthopaedic procedures. Therefore, a possible shortage of these kits would mean that surgeries may have to be cancelled.

However, the vast majority of sterile surgical kits are still imported from abroad. In order to reduce Hungary's import exposure in this area, the government has recently awarded support through the Health Industry Support Program to a Hungarian company, whose main activities will include the production of such sterile surgical kits.

Viktor Kiss, project manager at Miller Industries Hungary Kft. told Növekedés.hu: the healthcare industry, including the production of surgical kits, is a new area in the company's life, although it has been producing high quality textile products so far as well.

Thus, in fact, it is only sterilization that has to be dealt with newly, for which, and also for the production of hyaluronic acid products, a new factory hall is being built in Marcali.

Contrary to popular belief, hyaluronic acid is not only used in the beauty industry, but hyaluronic fillers are a common solution in rheumatology and orthopaedics for the treatment of joint abrasion.

Viktor Kiss explained that

the main objective that the company is expected to achieve is to primarily satisfy the domestic need for surgical kits and hyaluronic products with affordable products manufactured in Hungary.

Their prices were calculated and included in the business plan in such a way that healthcare institutions would be able to buy surgical kits at half or a third of the current price through public procurement.

At the same time, the project manager added that they would later be manufacturing for export as well, mainly to neighbouring countries.

The 2,000-square-metre factory in Marcali, which will employ about 50 people, is expected to be completed by April-May next year, and they are planning to produce 70,000 surgical kits in the first year, 120,000 in the second and 200,000 in the third.

With this, they expect to reach net sales of 245 million forints in the first year, 456 million in the second and 900 million in the third.

Although the production of hyaluronic acid products is a smaller segment, it will generate substantial sales revenues. In the first year, a total of 6,850 pieces of single and multi-treatment units are expected to be produced, resulting in 109 million forints in net sales; in the second year the plan is to reach 24,550 pieces and net sales of 349.8 million; while in the third year already 34,250 hyaluronic acid products will be produced in Marcali, generating a net sales revenue of 617.5 million forints.
