In Hungary the rate of natural population decline slowed down in the first seven months of 2020, as the number of births was 4.9 percent higher ( 2,488 more children) and the number of deaths was 5.1 percent lower than in the same period last year, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) revealed to MTI.

In the first seven months of the year 52,825 children were born. The increase in the number of live births was 8.8 percent in January-February, 2.3 percent in March-May, 8.9 percent in June, and 1.7 percent in July compared to the same months in 2019.

In January-July 2020, 74,093 people died, 3,992 fewer than in the same period last year. In January-February, there was a decrease of 13 percent, while in March-April an increase of 1.8 percent, and in May, June and July the number decreased again by 0.7, 3.5 and 6.1 percent, respectively, from a year earlier.

It was pointed out that as a result of the decrease in the number of deaths and the increase in the number of births, the natural population decline slowed down by 23 percent, i.e. by 6,480 compared to the same period of the previous year. The KSH data show that there were 34 337 new marriages , which is 2158 more than in January-July last year. The increase was 101 % in January-March and 8.9 percent in April, while in May-June and in July there was a 26 percent and 6.8 percent decrease from a year earlier. It was added that the smaller increase in April and the subsequent decrease may have been due to the ban on mass events due to the coronavirus epidemic.

There were 9.3 live births and 13 deaths per 1,000 inhabitants. The former figure is 0.4 percentage points higher than in the same period of the previous year, the latter is 0.7 percentage points lower, so the natural decrease was 1.1 percentage points lower than a year earlier.

In the first seven months of the year, there were 3.7 infant deaths per 1,000 live births, which is a decrease of 0.2 percentage points from a year ago. The marriage rate of 0.006 (the number of new marriages per 1,000 inhabitants) was 0.4 per thousand points higher than a year earlier, the statement revealed.
