Cancer mortality rates are not improving: the number of cancer deaths in the 1990s and 2000s was 30 to 33 thousand every year, and the number is the same today. Cancer claimed the fewest lives in 2005 and 1990 with around 30,000 deaths, while in 2003 and 2004 this number was more than 33,500.

Central Statistical Office (KSH) figures show that 17-19 thousand men and 13-14 thousand women die of cancer each year. In 2019, about 17.5 thousand men lost their lives to cancer, which is approximately the same as in 1990, but slightly better than in 1998-1999, when the number of cancer deaths per year was over 19 thousand.

Unfortunately, the situation is worsening for women: 30 years ago the number of deaths from oncological diseases was still under 13,500, in 2019, however, it exceeded 14,700,

and there was one year - 2015 -, when more than 15,000 women lost their lives to cancer.

In a previous article, Minister of Human Capacities responsible for healthcare Miklós Kásler stated that the number of cancer deaths was stagnating in recent years with some fluctuations, pointing out at the same time that the number of new cases diagnosed annually has increased significantly, suggesting that methods in both diagnosis and therapy have become more effective.

According to KSH data published since 2001, twenty years ago 62,601 newly diagnosed cancer cases were recorded, while in 2019 the same number was already 74,373.

In the last 20 years, the number of patients newly diagnosed with cancer increased from 32,297 to 36,877 for men and from 30,304 to 37,476 for women.
