Strong EU borders are indeed the precondition for free movements inside the bloc. In the lack of free movements of people, all the other freedoms of the European integration, including the single market, will weaken and finally vanish.

All in all, governments must defend their borders. Their failure to do the job has been immensely damaging the European project.

These are the real roots of today’s problems.
